The Association of Ibero-American Geological and Mining Surveys (ASGMI) actively participated in the 82nd Committee Meeting and Latin America Geoscience Workshop organized by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), held in Bogotá, Colombia, last week.
ASGMI reaffirms its strong belief that scientific cooperation is a fundamental tool for promoting sustainable development, strengthening regional technical capacities, and generating effective responses to shared challenges. In this regard, the event provided an excellent opportunity to reaffirm the principles of horizontal collaboration and network-based work that guide the mission of our Association.
ASGMI’s contribution was highlighted through a featured presentation titled “ASGMI: strengthening geoscience cooperation across Ibero-America”, delivered by the Secretary General, Gracia Olivenza. The presentation outlined the Association’s main lines of action, as well as the work carried out by its technical groups in strategic areas such as mineral resources, energy transition, geological risk reduction, geodiversity, and geological heritage.
Additionally, ASGMI took part in the roundtable discussion on Raw Materials/Renewable Energy, led by Yamirka Rojas-Agramonte and Marko Komac, where key issues were addressed regarding critical raw materials, sustainability, and the role of geosciences in the energy transition.
The meeting also served to strengthen institutional ties, build new connections with professionals and organizations across the region, and enable the reunion of experts and directors from ASGMI member geological surveys.
The Secretariat General extends special thanks to Dr. Jorge Gómez Tapias and the Colombian Geological Survey for their support in ensuring ASGMI’s participation in the event, and for the excellent organization.
ASGMI will continue to foster spaces for dialogue and technical cooperation that contribute to building an inclusive, open, and socially committed geoscience for the peoples of Ibero-America.
