The Association of Ibero-American Geological and Mining Services (ASGMI), through its Group of Experts on Geological Hazards, has completed the editing of the book “Geological Hazards in Ibero-America: Case Studies on Mass Movements, Earthquakes and Volcanoes”, a publication that brings together experiences and technical knowledge generated by specialists from the region.
The book has been edited by Enrique Armando Castellanos Abella, from the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Cuba; João P. G. Carvalho, from the Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia of Portugal; and Lina Marcela Castaño, from the Geological Survey of Colombia, who coordinated the joint work of specialists from geological surveys, universities, and research centers across Ibero-America.
This publication brings together 38 case studies focused on three major types of geological hazards —mass movements, earthquakes, and volcanoes— and represents a collective contribution aimed at improving the understanding of these phenomena and strengthening geological risk reduction in the region.
In line with the principles set out in the Declaration of Santa Cruz and the Declaration of Huasca de Ocampo, this work reflects the commitment of the Ibero-American Geological Services to the generation and dissemination of reliable geoscientific knowledge to support decision-making, land-use planning, and disaster risk reduction.
The book is also the result of the collaborative work promoted by the ASGMI Group of Experts on Geological Hazards, through the E4PIGEO Project, coordinated by Roberto Sarro of IGME-CSIC and funded by the CSIC LINCGLOBAL Programme, which is part of initiatives aimed at strengthening the connection between science and public policy, especially in a context of climate change and the increasing exposure of our territories to geological hazards.
Institutions from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Honduras, Mexico, Portugal, Peru, and the Dominican Republic participated in this initiative, demonstrating the regional scope and the value of Ibero-American technical cooperation.

Virtual workshop for the presentation of the book.
On the occasion of this publication, ASGMI, through the Group of Experts on Geological Hazards, will organize a virtual workshop where the book will be presented and some of the case studies included in the publication will be shared. During the workshop, experiences, methodologies, and scientific advances that contribute to improving the understanding of geological hazards and their management in Ibero-America will be presented.
The workshop will be held on April 21 at 16:00 CEST (UTC +2).
The detailed agenda and connection link will be announced soon.
This publication represents an example of the value of Ibero-American cooperation and the role of Geological Services as reference institutions in the generation of scientific and technical knowledge at the service of society, territorial resilience, and sustainable land management.
