BACKGROUND:
The Group of Experts in Geoscientific Information Systems -GESIG- is created, in compliance with the agreements of the XXIV ASGMI General Assembly held in the city of Salta, Argentina, with the general objective of having working procedures and methodologies that allow sharing the experiences and geoscientific information generated in the geological services.
The Group is coordinated by Dr. Lucila Gómez of the Colombian Geological Survey and Dr. Román Hernández of the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain as deputy coordinator.
MISSION AND VISION OF THE GROUP OF EXPERTS IN GEOSCIENTIFIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS:
According to the objectives of the group, its mission is to lay the foundations to facilitate the implementation of data models that improve the management of geoscientific information, as well as its exchange between the geological surveys that are members of ASGMI.
The vision of the group is to act as a transversal body within ASGMI to facilitate and stimulate improvements in the management of geoscientific information, and to offer alternatives for its dissemination.
SHORT- AND MEDIUM-TERM OBJECTIVES:
Through the General Secretariat and the International Cooperation Group -GECI-, GESIG will be coordinated with the rest of the expert groups to analyze their database and GIS needs.
Discussions have been initiated to establish concrete actions for GIS collaboration with the Eurogeosurveys counterpart group. It is hoped that a joint proposal can be developed to find funding for the development of a joint platform for hosting data of geoscientific interest.
