BACKGROUND:
The Group of Experts in Regional Geology and Geological Mapping – GEGEO – was created and started its activity in early 2020 by agreement of the Board of Directors, at the request of some ASGMI members and the Group of Experts in Hydrogeology and Hydrogeological Mapping.
GEGEO is coordinated by Alicia Folguera (Argentinian Geological and Mining Survey, SEGEMAR) as coordinator and Sofía Huapaya (Directorate of Geology and Mines of Costa Rica, DGM) and Andrea Albán (Institute of Geological and Energy Research of Ecuador, IIGE).
MISSION AND VISION OF THE GROUP OF EXPERTS IN REGIONAL GEOLOGY AND GEOLOGICAL MAPPING:
The mission of GEGEO is to promote and facilitate the exchange of experiences, knowledge of working methodologies related to surveying and geological mapping among the geological surveys members of ASGMI. The following are considered as specific objectives for the fulfillment of its mission:
- Promote specific cooperation agreements for the transfer of knowledge, protocols and operating procedures in geological mapping at different scales.
- cooperate, by means of scientific and technical support, for the planning and implementation of national programs of geological mapping in the geological surveys members of ASGMI that do not carry out geological mapping in a systematic way.
- Harmonize geological mapping in transboundary areas, with prior agreement between the geological surveys involved.
The vision of the group is to act as an advisory body in matters concerning regional geology and geological mapping, to ASGMI expert groups that require it, as well as to other organizations and institutions of the region for which geological knowledge is a basic input for the proper management of their competences.
SHORT AND MEDIUM-TERM OBJECTIVES:
The objectives of the Group are the following:
- Elaboration of a Glossary or standardization of geological terms of the different countries that appear on geological maps.
- Elaboration of a Guide with what a basic geological map should contain. Guide with Proposal of Contents and Methodology of Work.
- Holding, in November 2023, of the joint EGS – ASGMI Virtual Workshop on Geological Cartography and Regional Geology.
WORKSHOPS HELD:
Online Workshop of the EGS and ASGMI Expert Groups on Regional Geology and Geological Mapping, on Geological Mapping and 3D Modeling, held on November 15th and 16th, 2023.
